Self study 08/09/08

As my self study today I read a newspaper about Hackney borough where I live. I read about rycacling action and a law which says that there are going to be financial penatly for people who drop litter and do not clean after their pupils. It is said that over 9 milion pounds have to be spent on cleaning Hackney's streets. I also watched TV's news and I found out that there was a man killed in Hackney today. This is horrible what is heppening here. I also practised my presentation for tomorrow- I feel quite confident but I need to do it few times more to be sure that I will be ready. New learnt vocabulary:

a little bit relax

As my today's self study I decided to read a book about yoga practise. I borrowed it from my library and it seems to be very interesting one. I am realy interested in practising yoga and this is why I love getting new information about this fitness. I have read about the "asanas" condition which cleanses the body. It can be recognized as stretches, twists, bends and inversion(odwroty) of your body. The "pranayama" condition is more spiritual and gives the balance to your soul. If you practise reguraly both asanas and pranayama it will control your breathing, recticy physical, physilogical and psychological disorders. It is very important for practitioners not to focus just on the physical health but put some attention to the mind as well. If my body is appropriately balanced it will help me to deal with stress and health disorders. In fact I found out very interesting informationa and learnt new vocaulary as well.

My essay is done!

For the last three days I have been working very hard writing my essay. Today I finished it and it makes me very happy. It was quite hard work to write about my subject area because there was so many information and at the same time nothing. I had to chose appropriate information and make them sensible. By the way I learnt a lot of proffesional vocabulary during reading all these books. I can say it was very useful lesson for me due to accademic reading and writing.Classes with Susannah have been very helpful as well, otherwise I would have no clue about referencing and plagiarism. I can see that I have improved my vocaulary but I am not sure about the grammar. I will find out when Susannah assesses my work. Ops....I am a little bit scared of this. Hopefully everything will be ok because I made so much effort to do it as best as I could.

The first attempt at writing essay

Today I tried to write a first part of my essay. I found some good sources and I used them. I initialy have the generaly considered part of globalisation. I am going to do more research tomorrow. I tried to enter the university library service about journals but I was not allowed so I found a quite usefull journal website www.iop.org/EJ. I recommend to check it out to everyone.
I will also write a little bit about my last days experiences. It has been a nice weather for the few days so me and my boyfriend decided to bicycle. We found very nice park around the place where we live but it seems to be unlucky place for my bike. When we were entering the park I had a flat tyre! Luckly my brother picked us up by car from that place so we did not have to walk all this way. My boyfried fixed the tyre for me today and we decided to visit that park at last. On the way where I have never been seing anything dangerous to my bike I had a bed luck! I had a flat tyre again!!!This time we had to walk all this way home in the fully sun!It was very hard to deal with it. There must be something with that park that my bike does not want to go there:) Hopefully the third time I will be lucky:) I am going to try soon.

Essay research!

I worked very hard this evening to find appropriate examples for my essay. I think it was quite effective time because I found some realy good websites and opinions. Hopefully I will be able to use them in my work. I learnt a lot of new phrases and vocabulary as well. I also typed out the draft of the essay for Susannah.My English language self study took place at my work too.During the conversations with my clients I put more attention at the grammar and as a result I can see some successes.

Self study 26/08/08

I have been very active today. I read a little bit about student services which booklet I have taken from the Admission Centre . I also tried to find out which days I am going to spend at the university but unfortunately I did not find the option for part- time course so I will ask again tomorrow. I found some information for my essay(in particular examples which I need) and I am going to read more about it now.Maybe I will find the information capable of placing in my work. I studied with my boyfriend - we learnt the vocabulary from my blog spot and some other sources as well.
I am going to write some sentenses using new- learnt vocabulary:
* My problems may seem to be trivial to other people but I am despairing of solving them.
* Some companies exploit their employee but the trade union is going to take care of them.
* Globalisation process is a long- lasting evolution of the world, but the main question is if it will be profitable in the future.
* Working and studing has its pros and cons but the student needs to reveal a hard- working stance to deal with it.

Today's new vocabulary:
* to hold somebody in high esteem- darzyc kogos wielkim szacunkiem
* the principle- zasada; in principle- w zasadzie; on principle- dla zasady
* the compassion-współczucie
* the fad- przelotna, chwilowa moda
* the abusive situation- obrażliwa sytuacja
* to insist on sth- upirac sie przy czyms
* compliance(with) - uległość, podporzadkowanie sie
* commitment- zobowiązanie, zaangażowanie
* fragrance- zapach

Self study 25/08/08

Today I spent a lot of time searching some sources which I would be able to use for my essay. I found it very difficult to get proper example of the case which I want to explain. I learnt a lot but I feel it was useless because I did not find any concrete facts which will be convenient to my work. I also did my homework and wrote draft of my essay( unfortunately without examples so it is still worthless). I spoke to my friend and she suggested me few subjects which I can mantion in my work. Hopefully I will find a good way to make my essay correct.

Self study 23/08/08

This afternoon as my self study I did homework which Robin and Susannah asked us to do. It was ok however I had to use the dictionary to fulfill my vocabulary. I am going to list these words and write the meaning of them in polish language. Although I know it would be more beneficial for me if I wrote it in English, but I will use my blog as a kind of notebook which I will learn from. When I remember these words properly I will write them again with English synonymes to increase my knowledge. I know most of these words but I will translate them once again to keep them on mind.
* the soil- gleba
* to exhaust- wyczerpywać
* the expertise- wiedza, umiejetność
* the pastime- hobby
* vignette reveal- portret ujawniać
* trivial- błahy, trywialny
* to propel- napędzać maszyne, popychać czlowieka
* to spring up- wyrastac( jak grzyby po deszczu)
* to dispute- spierać sie, spór
* the tribulations- troski
* the trials- przykre przejścia
* the sovereignty- suwerenność
* the myth- mit
* remain intact- pozostawać nienaruszony
* the fund manager- menadzer od funduszy
* solely - jedynie, wyłącznie
* intimate- bliski, intymny
* to intimate that- dawać do zrozumienia
* to compete- rywalizować, brać udział
* impoverished- zubożały
* despair- rozpacz
* to despair of- tracić nadzieje na.., wątpić w...
* merely- tylko, jedynie
* abound- mnożyć sie
* hence- stąd, w związku z tym
* dimly- blado, słabo, mgliście
* the will- wola

Reading the lecture text which Susannah gave to us was very useful as practise of academical reading. I undersood that while reading long texts I have to take notes straight away not to waste my time for first reading. I became convinced that it is possible to understand the text properly even if I do not know all vocabulary used there. I put my attention on grammar of the lecture text as well. I am sure that the notes which I have taken will be very helpful during preparation of our poster.

Self study 22/08/08

I found quite interesting way to research about globalisation subject. I watched few programs to get general idea about this. I watched John Pilger's documentary program http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7932485454526581006
which shocked me a little bit. I also watched another one which tries to convince community to believe that globalisation is good video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5633239795464137680. This afternoon I am going to continue my research about globalisation and try to write an introduction to my essay. I am going to go through website: http://www.sociology.emory.edu/globalization/ which seems to be very interesting.

I looked at the above website and I found it really useful, however the language used there is quite difficult it took me a time to understand it. I did research about globalization on some polish websites to understand the subject properly. I also learnt lots of professional vocabulary during translating it to English language and making notes. I cought the general and more specific problem of this subject. I can start doing proper research in English now.

However I will find it very helpful being prepared for this. I also did little bit of exercices which we have started during the lesson.

Self study 20/08/08

Today I started my self study session from doing my homework which Robin asked us for. Additionally I checked properly all words which I did not understand. I am going to write them down on my blog to strenghten my knowledge of them by reading them every time I update my blogspot.

My plans for my next self study session:
1) watch TV programs- find out more about british economic
2) practise effective reading

Self study 19/08/08

Unfortunately I had to work this afternoon but I can treat it as kind of English practise. I spoke to people and tried to catch some new words which I did not know before. speech
* a prosperity- success, good fortune, riches
* a corpse- dead body
* a corporal punishement- physical punishement, such as caning

Another activity which I did this evening was searching some information about globalization on the internet. I visited the wabsite: http://www1.worldbank.org/economicpolicy/globalization/ where I read little bit about this subject. I decided to learn phrases insted of single words and this is what I managed to absorb :
* an significant international opposition- important international opponent, hostility
* an increased inequality- bigger disparity, imprity
* the Chancellor of the Exchequer- cabinet minister respponsible for finance
* to reduce poverty- decrease poor circumstances
My plans for next self study!!!
1) I am going to read some articles or book to improve my grammar and reading skills.
2) I am going to watch TV to learn proper pronunciation of words.

Self study 18/08/08

What are my aims for this month?

The answer is both easy and little bit complicated. Obviously I am going to improve my English language skills but the point of this is how to do this best. I did kind of examination of myself yesterday and I decided I had to work out my grammar and reading skills mostly.

How am I going to do this?

Firstly I can not to give up if there will be any misfortunes and difficulties.
Secondly I need to read more books and newspapers what will improve my grammar and vocabulary.
Thirdly I am going to watch some interesting programs on TV what will help me practising pronunciation of words.
However I want to focus on more effective reading which is very important on university. I am planning to exercise on texts from my IELTS practice book and form the website: www.longman.com

Who am I ?

My name is Paulina. I come from a small town called Busko Zdroj located in south part of Poland. There is 16000 inhibitants living there what makes it very quiet and peaceful place. I came to London 3 years ago to develop myself and live more effectively. I can say that I am doing well because I am succesful in some aims which I planned before. During this time I gathered NVQ qaulification of General Beauty Therapy, I work in my profession and now it is the time for me to step up.

I have always been interested in science and some economical subjects such as Marketing what I am going to study. As the second subject I chose Business because I have always been curious of this and how it works. Apart of this I like sport( bicycling and yoga practise) and travelling.By this time I visited Hungary, Ukraine, Slovakia, France, Canada and Denmark.

In the nearest future I would love to be succesful in the course which I have been taking and take the advantage of this during my degree.
